In today's fast-paced business world, companies are increasingly recognizing the importance of employee wellness. But what exactly is corporate wellness, and how can fitness professionals tap into this growing market? Debbie Bellenger, a veteran in the field of corporate and medical wellness, joined the Trainers Talking Truths podcast in 2024 to explore these questions and more.

What is Wellness?

Bellenger defines wellness as "a comprehensive approach to taking care of people, mind, body, spirit." She further distinguishes between wellness and wellbeing, explaining that "wellness is very static, it's a moment in time. Wellbeing is an evolution."

The Business Case for Corporate Wellness

Why should companies invest in employee wellness? Bellenger points to several key factors:

  1. Rising healthcare costs

  2. Employee retention

  3. Productivity and engagement

"Post pandemic, the employers, and most particularly the small to medium-sized employers, are really struggling," Bellenger notes. "The biggest challenge for employers, and the reason why they are interested, and need to be interested in employee wellness programming, is the rising costs of healthcare."

She cites a study forecasting a 13.8% increase in healthcare costs for employers by the end of 2023. This financial pressure, combined with the need to retain employees in a competitive job market, makes corporate wellness programs an attractive investment.

Getting Started in Corporate Wellness

For fitness professionals looking to break into corporate wellness, Bellenger emphasizes the importance of relationships. "Cold calling is a massive no-no, please do not do that," she advises. Instead, she suggests leveraging existing client relationships and networks.

"The low hanging fruit really is, who do you know? It's all about relationships and finding the right people," Bellenger explains. She recommends starting with your current client base and looking for opportunities to expand your services to their workplaces.

Creating Effective Corporate Wellness Programs

When designing wellness programs for companies, Bellenger stresses the importance of addressing key health issues that impact businesses:

  1. Obesity and related health conditions

  2. Mental health issues

  3. Musculoskeletal problems

  4. Diabetes

  5. Hypertension

"If we look at what are the cost drivers for employers, 'All right, fitness professionals, what are your solutions?'" Bellenger challenges. She encourages fitness pros to think creatively about how their skills and offerings can address these issues in the workplace.
