In a world filled with challenges, there are initiatives that shine as beacons of hope, proving that even in the darkest of circumstances, there is room for growth, transformation, and redemption. Project Flex is one such beacon. Founded in 2018 within Northern Illinois University, Project Flex is an innovative sport leadership program that operates within the Illinois Department of Juvenile Justice. It's designed to empower incarcerated youth to reimagine their futures, offering them a path toward self-development, education, and employment opportunities upon their release.

The Humble Beginnings of Project Flex

In Illinois, juvenile facilities are not equipped to provide holistic programming to create pathways for youth out of the prison pipeline. Project Flex began as what can most be compared to a modest after-school club, providing incarcerated youth with a space to engage in sports and fitness activities. However, it quickly evolved into something much more profound.

Jenn Jacobs, Ph.D., and Zachary Wahl-Alexander, Ph.D., the dynamic duo behind Project Flex, realized the potential to integrate life skills into sports and fitness sessions seamlessly. Rather than just playing sports and having separate discussions about character development, they weaved these vital life lessons into the very fabric of the physical activities. This unique approach aimed to demonstrate to the youth that the skills learned through sports and fitness were directly transferable to their lives outside the walls of their incarceration. Lessons on teamwork, self-growth, and leadership were now not just abstract concepts, but tangible tools for their future success.

Backed by evidence-based programming focused on youth physical and mental health, character development, and access to higher education, Project Flex became the clear solution to support the juvenile justice system in Illinois. Over time, Project Flex expanded its offerings. The program introduced one-on-one personal training sessions, delivered by certified graduate students of Northern Illinois University. These sessions not only addressed the physical health of the youth but also fostered mentorship and strong relationships between the students and mentors.

The Evolution of Project Flex

As Project Flex continued to grow, it adapted to the unique needs and aspirations of the incarcerated youth it served. Recognizing that college education might be a viable path for some, the program provided opportunities for participants to experience life on a college campus. This included attending classes, exploring campus facilities, and engaging in sports-related activities.

However, Project Flex went beyond college preparation. Acknowledging that college isn't the right fit for everyone, the program expanded its focus to include opportunities for the youth to become certified personal trainers. This shift aimed to empower participants with job-ready skills, allowing them to secure employment and build a brighter future upon their release.

Now, in its sixth year of operation, Project Flex has come a long way from its humble beginnings. From a small after-school club, it has grown into a transformative program touching the lives of incarcerated youth across Illinois. With its success evident, the program is poised to make an even greater impact, thanks to a groundbreaking partnership with the International Sports Sciences Association (ISSA).

The Impact of the Project Flex + ISSA

Project Flex's partnership with ISSA is a landmark moment in its journey. While the program has achieved remarkable success over the years, this collaboration promises to take its impact to new heights. The partnership will not only enhance the program's offerings but also open doors to a wider audience, creating ripples of change that extend far beyond Illinois.

ISSA is known for its commitment to fitness and wellness education and certifications. With a comprehensive range of fitness courses and a global network of fitness professionals, ISSA is well-positioned to contribute to Project Flex's mission of transforming lives through sport and education.

The partnership rolled out in October 2023, and its impact is already being felt within the facilities where Project Flex operates. The program will train a select group of youth, along with a staff member, in a pilot program. This initiative will provide the participants with access to education to achieve ISSA certifications, a valuable asset that can significantly enhance their earning potential upon release.

The Youth Perspective

The partnership between Project Flex and ISSA is regarded as a life-changing opportunity by the individual youth the program aims to develop. Since the pilot program is limited to a specific group, Project Flex has introduced an application for interested candidates to share why they should be selected.

Anonymous applications were submitted for evaluation, and the responses received illustrate the significance these individuals attach to this opportunity. For example, one applicant wrote, “Project Flex is helping my fitness! To keep the inspiration going, you try to help others, as others helped me.”

Furthermore, another applicant shared, “I feel like I can inspire people to keep pushing, even when they can’t. I feel like people can also work out anything they feel, especially when feeling down or blue.”

Application after application, it becomes evident that these incarcerated youth are deeply committed to leading a healthy lifestyle, assisting others, and building a strong future for themselves upon their release.

A Glimpse into the Future

As we eagerly await the results of Project Flex's initial cohort with ISSA, we can't help but feel inspired by the dedication and vision of the individuals behind this transformative program. Project Flex has proven that the power of sports and fitness extends far beyond physical health. It has shown that these activities can instill values, build character, and pave the way for a brighter future, even for those facing the most challenging circumstances.

In the coming months, we anticipate hearing success stories from the youth who participate in this pilot program. These stories will not only showcase the program's impact but also highlight the potential for similar initiatives to thrive in other states and facilities. With ISSA's support, Project Flex is well-equipped to become a model for rehabilitation and empowerment through sports and education.

Joining Hands for a Brighter Future

The partnership between Project Flex and ISSA exemplifies the power of collaboration and the potential for positive change. It's a testament to what can be achieved when individuals and organizations come together with a shared vision of creating a better world.

As we look ahead, we also recognize the importance of spreading the word. Project Flex is actively seeking graduate students and mentors to join their program.
