The Short Answer

Pull-ups and lat pulldowns are both vertical pulls, and they train the same primary muscles: the lats, mid-back, and biceps. Neither one is the universal winner. Pull-ups build more relative strength and ask for full-body tension and core stabilization. Lat pulldowns are seated and supported and let you set the load precisely and rack up more volume, which makes them especially handy for beginners and for muscle-building work. The strongest programs use both, matched to where your client is and what they're chasing.

So the better question isn't “which one.” It's “which one, for this client, right now.” Here's how to decide with confidence.

Same Pattern, Different Tools

Both moves are vertical pulls. The arms travel from overhead down toward the torso (think making a “V” to a “W” with the arms), driven by the lats and mid-back. The key difference is what actually moves. In a pull-up, the body moves toward a fixed bar, so your client has to manage their full bodyweight and brace head to toe. In a lat pulldown, the body stays put and the load moves, so you can set the resistance to anything the stack allows.

That one difference drives everything else: who can do each, how much you can load, how much volume holds up over time, and what carries over to the rest of the program.

Muscles Worked

Both moves share nearly the same primary muscles:

Latissimus dorsi, the prime mover in both, driving the pull.

Rhomboids and middle and lower traps, which pull the shoulder blades down and together.

Biceps and brachialis, bending the elbow through the pull.

Core and grip, which work much harder in the pull-up because the whole body hangs and braces.

The muscle emphasis is almost identical. The real gap is total-body involvement. The pull-up brings in the core, glutes, and grip to hold a rigid hanging body, while the lat pulldown lets you focus on the pulling muscles with the body supported.

How to Program Both

For Beginners

Start with lat pulldowns to build the pulling pattern and strength at a load they can handle, alongside assisted pull-ups with a band or machine and slow eccentric pull-ups where they jump to the top and lower under control. Put those together and your client reaches their first unassisted pull-up faster than they would with either one alone.

For Intermediate and Advanced Clients

Use pull-ups as the main vertical pull, adding weight as they get stronger, and bring in lat pulldowns as a volume accessory to stack extra sets without the full-body fatigue of more pull-ups. A common setup is heavy weighted pull-ups early in the session, then higher-rep lat pulldowns after.
