Since 2021, the International Sports Sciences Association (ISSA), F45 Training, and the For Purpose Foundation have built a powerful alliance that bridges military service and civilian careers through the Burpees for Vets Challenge. This enduring partnership, which raised $92,441 in 2024 and has generated $262,871 since its inception, continues to strengthen its impact on veterans' transition into civilian life through careers in fitness.
"The fitness industry naturally aligns with veterans' core values of discipline, leadership, and service to others," says Kurt Mangum II, VP of Strategic Partnerships at ISSA. "Through our partnership with F45 and the For Purpose Foundation, we're not just offering certification programs – we're creating a pathway for veterans to transform their military experience into rewarding civilian careers while continuing to serve their communities."
The impact of this initiative spans far beyond traditional workforce development. Through the F45 Veteran Impact Program (VIP), $46,221 has been allocated specifically for veterans and service members seeking financial aid to earn coaching certifications. This investment will enable approximately 155 veterans to launch sustainable careers in the fitness industry and join the F45 family as certified coaches.
"What makes this program truly unique is its holistic approach," Mangum explains. "By combining ISSA's comprehensive certification programs with F45's proven training methodology, we're equipping veterans with both the knowledge and practical experience they need to succeed in the fitness industry."
The 2024 Burpees for Vets Challenge saw unprecedented community engagement, with 139 F45 studios and 1,591 donors participating nationwide. This community-driven initiative focused on three core areas: Workforce Development, Community Building, and Mental Wellness, each receiving equal emphasis in the program's strategy.
"The response from the F45 community has been extraordinary," notes Mangum. "It's inspiring to see how our partnership has created a sustainable model where fitness education can directly impact veterans' lives while building stronger, more connected communities."
Looking ahead, ISSA and F45 remain committed to expanding their impact on veteran employment in the fitness industry. With the program's proven success and growing community support, this partnership continues to set the standard for innovative veteran transition programs.
"Every burpee completed and every dollar raised represents our commitment to supporting veterans in their journey to civilian success," concludes Mangum. "Through fitness education and career opportunities, we're helping veterans write their next chapter while strengthening the fitness industry with their valuable leadership and experience."
