NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS: When the Going Gets Tough…

Carpinteria, CA – January 30, 2008 –Just about the end of January each year, we lose momentum as it relates to wellness resolutions. Often times people know exactly what to do, but aren’t motivated enough to do it on their own. They need some sort of ‘Body Buddy’—in the form of a personal trainer or workout partner—to help their resolutions stick.

“Studies have shown that training with a workout partner can drastically improve your chances of getting fit,” says Clark Bartram, ISSA Director of Media Relations and Certified Master Trainer. “If you know you need to meet someone at a certain time, chances are you won’t stand them up as easily as you would hit the snooze button when going it alone.  Plus, your time at the gym will fly by and be a lot more fun if you exercise with a friend.”

Locating Your Ideal Body Buddy

  1. Choose a partner with a fitness level close to yours. This will ensure that 1) you don’t hold that person back and 2) you won’t push yourself too fast and risk injury.
  1. Find a partner who has the same fitness goals as you. If you want to gain muscle and your partner wants to lose weight, this could create a problem right off the bat. Do your best to find someone who shares the same fitness needs.
  1. Find a like-minded buddy. Having someone you have similar life goals with will keep you motivated both in and out of the gym. For example, if you are happily married and your new gym partner is single and loving it…this could create some problems down the line.
  1. Consider one of your kids. The gym is an excellent time to have meaningful discussions outside of the house that build lasting bonds between parents and their children. Plus, setting a positive example for your children about healthy lifestyle choices is priceless.
